Praying for the Lost

Recently at a Learning Party, for a prayer community that I am apart of, we looked at a guy named Daniel Nash. Here is a guy who understood what prayer could do and what was meant by the verse, "prayer without ceasing." This has impacted my spirit, especially as prayer related to ministry. The quote from the article we looked at shows what I think is the most profound part of what needs to be changed in today's ministries. The article is quite long, but there is so much interesting stuff in it that I would recommend you still give it a read. I hope this inspires you as much as it did me.

DANIEL NASH: PREVAILING PRINCE OF PRAYER

"Finney never counted on his theology, messages, preaching style, logic, or methods to save souls. He looked rather to mighty prayer and the resulting powerful work of the Holy Spirit to sweep in with great conviction on his audience, that his conversions might be thorough. This may well explain why 80 per cent of those converted in his meetings stood the test of time. Years later Moody followed a similar pattern but without such a prayer warrior. He saw perhaps 50 per cent of his converts last. Today, a well-known evangelist (well-financed and highly organized) recently stated that he would be delighted if 20 per cent of his converts were genuinely converted. In this day of apostasy with many decisions but few true conversions, with many programs but little prayer, with much organizing but little agonizing, we would be wise to learn lessons from the past. One of our godly forefathers whose life can teach us such is Daniel Nash."

Prayer for the Week

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept my prayers; and because in my weakness I can do nothing good without you, give me the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments I may please you in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. †

E-Mail Addiction?

Twelve-steps to curing e-mail addiction - CNN.com

"Alcoholics have one, and so do drug abusers. Now people addicted to e-mail also have a 12-step program designed to tackle their obsession."

Are you addicted to your email? Maybe some people are addicted more to blogs? Funny how this article talks alot about CEO of larger companies when this might be affecting the average person; maybe not in quite the same way, but still affecting none the less. One point of interest is where the article talks about someone who had 3,600 emails in their inbox!!! Maybe instead of having personal email, these people should have their secretaries go through their mail first, I mean, they go through the snail mail, why not the e-mail. Anyways, I thought that for those unorganized types, this post could shed some light on helping you with your overflowing inbox.

100th Post

This is important milestone in the world of my blog. I thought I would post some of the more interesting, thought-provoking, and popular posts over the past year.

- Foundations - "I heard it said recently that if an outsider where to try to understand the trinity that they might look at it as "God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Scriptures" To me this statement means alot and is a warning."

- Foundations- Part Two - "Could it be that our modern mindset have corrupted our thinking so much that we may need to retreat somewhat in how we read scripture?"

- Humble Pie - "So today, may you realize that your life is a gift and that we all need to look beyond ourselves. May we come to live in a humble manner and not in a "me" first kinda way."

- Top Ten Poker Quotes - #9 - note: no one ever seemed to notice that I never did get to number one.

- Father to be... - "Those three years of dealing with infertility I believe are helping us to see how blessed we are."

- It's a Girl! - My most joyous moment captured on my blog.

- Snowsuit? - The most popular post of the year.

Thank you to all of those that continue to read my ramblings. I hope that by reading this blog you feel inspired, encouraged, challenged, or maybe you just laugh or enjoy the sweet pictures of my daughter. Here's to another 100!

The Prayer for the Week

O Lord, you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing: Send your Holy Spirit and pour into my heart your greatest gift, which is love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whoever lives is accounted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. †

Posing

Artistic?
Originally uploaded by ddgrunau.

Since my daughter, Libby, has decided that she can crawl and explore the whole main floor of our house, AND, she can stand up with not much more help than a pant leg, she has discovered our coffee table. She loves to peer through the many openings in the table. These openings are usually full of stuff, but she usually finds a way to clear them out and look through. We had lots of fun playing peekaboo through them today, but when I took out the camera to get this artsy shot, instead of laughing, she thought it would be way better to just strike a pose, a serious pose that is. Maybe she is trying to appear smart? Hmmm, not sure....maybe she is wondering where I put the computer she oh so loves that use to be in that opening? Or is she relaxing after geeking out with me from the last post? By the way, she already loves the new computer, especially when I turn on the isight for her to have her picture taken, or to record her. Keep up those good poses Libby.

Geeking out

Geeky
Originally uploaded by ddgrunau.

I just thought I would show off my new black Macbook in the process of transferring all my data from my old ibook. The whole process only took alittle under 2hrs. And when the new book booted up for the first time, it was all done. Email, preferences, and even the desktop had all the same icons and background. Setup done, leaving much more time for geeking out. Especially when I got to video chat on my new built in isight. Mac does it again.

For my love

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest,
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Happy Valentine's Day to my beautiful wife.

Prayer for the Week

Following my previous post I will try to remember to post the prayer for the week from now on.

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because of our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Liturgy and Fixed Hour Prayer

Recently, I have come to discover liturgy and especially prayer books. Coming from a strong evangelical background this was something very different to me, something that years earlier I would have scoffed at for being to repetitive and legalistic. However, as my wife and I have become apart of an establishing 24-7Prayer community in Saskatoon, I have found that establishing "rhythms" of prayer to be vastly important. The first rhythm of prayer I established was in the 24-7prayer communities prayer room where I have been taking time each month for lengthy times of prayer. These time slots in the prayer room have been great times to get away and to hear from God and to cry out to him. The next rhythm, which I am still struggling with, is to withhold the "hours" of prayer. To learn about the history of fixed hour prayer click here. I have picked up the prayer book The Divine Hours which is also available online here.

I just read a blog on repetitive prayers and liturgy that I thought was great. Read the comments as well as there is some great conversation taking place. Give it a read, its not long. Read The Liturgy of Marriage

Hope this spurs you on to a better prayer life and to help establish rhythms of prayer in your life.
