Solitude part 2

I love camp fires, especially late in the summer. You know when it gets cold at night and its that perfect temperature to sit by the fire, feel the warmth, but not get swelteringly hot like in July. I have always found it so easy to sit and reflect beside a fire. It reminds me of those nights when I was younger at Kadesh. We would sit around the fire and long to sing songs for hours and hours. I remember singing, Father of Lights, an old song now I'm sure, and watching God amaze us with the most spectacular display of northern lights. Those where good times. I felt God so close in experiences like that when I was young. I wish I could say that my time at Ranger Lake was just like those moments around the fire when I was younger, with just as much a deep spiritual connection to God. But I can't. Instead, I felt nothing at all like that. I find it interesting that the experience I am going through right now comes at the same time as I read this blog today over at nakedpastor. Mother Teresa Me and You. It speaks of the struggle Mother Teresa went through without sharing, a heavy burden that she shared with no one. The article states something interesting, "Now that she is no longer with us and her letters are being published, perhaps the next and most important leg of her ministry will begin: giving people permission to express their spiritual struggles and inner torments." While I don't know where I am on this journey, or as St.John of the Cross calls it, a "Dark Night of the Soul," what I do know is this: we must be free to share struggles, to be allowed to question, and to even doubt God's presence in our lives. Openness and vulnerability are things which we need even more in our communities of faith. That is how I try to write on this blog....
So while I didn't feel a deep spiritual connection around the fire at Ranger, I did notice something...the fire was bright, it was hot, but for some reason I keep having to trek into the woods for more fire wood. I noticed I had to do this quite alot in the first hour or so. It reminded me of my personal faith....the fire can be extremely hot, and bright, but I must continue to hike, trek, and put fuel onto the fire or it will burn out. So while I don't always feel God's presence or get a great spiritual experience, I must keep fueling the fire. I read in Pete Grieg's book "God on Mute," about a man who lost all taste for food. Eating gave him no pleasure, but to survive he had to keep eating, therefore, so must we continue to seek out truth, to pray, to seek times of solitude. They are the fuel for the fire, even if we have lost that connection. For one day we will be made complete, we will taste and see once again.

Solitude part 1

On Monday I had a chance to get out of the city for some silence and solitude with God. This was a great experience, and while I didn't come away from the time with burning bush experience. It did give me a chance to reflect on some things. Hopefully I will find time to write about some of those things later. It was a great time to enjoy nature and to unplug. The picture is a photo taken of my campsite at the end of the lake, out at Ranger Lake. Beautiful. I encourage you all to find time to get away, alone.

Please pray

One of the biggest parts of my ministry at YFC is running a club for jr. high students in the Queen Elizabeth community. I have been connected to this community for 3 years and know alot of students and parents from the area of Saskatoon. It is for this reason that we looked for a year to buy a house and move into the area. God has provided that home for us and know we must go to Him again. Right now we are without a facility to continue running this program in the school. While we have support from parents and teachers in the community we have lost our time slot in Queen Elizabeth school. Please pray that God will move in the community association to allow us to be able to continue to run this program. This is very deep on my heart as we have just moved and the thought of having to uproot our club is weighing heavy on my heart.

This is the day...

That's right, this is the day the California Trip leaves. Which mean my wife's job as Calbreak administrator will come to an end, we will get to leave for Easter Break to visit Dawn's parents, and it also means the beginning for those of us on the prayer team I had mentioned. I will talk about that yet, but first...

I just thought I would mention that we are in the process of trying to buy a house! That is if one of our offers is accepted, which is a big "if". We have been house hunting in the crazy market of Saskatoon for about 1 year now and we are praying that God will provide a new home for us. We have been praying for this for a long time as the area of Saskatoon we long to live in is close to the school where many students live that I work with at YFC. This will open up many doors for us if we are able to live right in this community. We should know if we have a new house by Sunday or Tuesday.

Prayer Team Update: All of those who have committed to praying for the students can request a complete list of the students and staff by emailing daryl@yfcsask.com. I had previously mentioned that the team would be meeting together, however, these meetings will be announced for next week, as I will be in Alberta over the Easter long weekend. However, if you wish to join in prayer, the staff at the Youth For Christ office meets during the week at 9am each morning to pray for the trip. For directions to the office please phone (306)242-7117 for more information. And finally, updates for the trip will be posted online at once the trip is underway. Thank you to those people who have committed to praying each day.

Global Day of Prayer - May 27th

Last year, approximately 200 million people from just about 200 nations gathered together on Pentecost Sunday for the "Global Day of Prayer". It was, without a doubt, the largest prayer gathering ever in the history of our world ...

On May 27th, this gathering will happen again, and Saskatoon will be a part of it!!

In the weeks ahead, we'll be releasing information about the venue, the special guests, and how you can prepare for this exciting day and how to sharing about it to your church. If you have questions, you can contact us at gdopsaskatoon@shaw.ca

In the meantime, please enjoy the video below, which features a bit of the history and heart of the "Global Day of Prayer" ...

Too Busy and need more prayer

Sorry that I have been abit delayed (and even missed last weeks prayer) in posting on here lately. We have been very busy with planning for our California Breakaway trip. See past videos here. This year Dawn is working almost fulltime hours in the office which has made our lives extremely busy. Yesterday Dawn, Libby and myself, together with James Clifford, travelled down to Weyburn for a parents meeting. All went well down in Weyburn, but it added up to a 12 hour day, and one tired Libby.

Update on prayer: I am still urgently needing people to come join my prayer team for the California Trip. If you don't live in Saskatoon you can still join, you will just miss out on the corporate prayer times. Just to let you know, the prayer team is only two people right now. Please email me daryl@yfcsask.com or phone the office to talk to me more about it. 242-7117.

On another note: About a week ago I injured my back quite badly playing Ultimate. I have been seeing the chiropractor regularly, but it seems to not be getting alot better. Please pray that God will heal my back, especially with all the busyness, it makes picking up and doing stuff for Libby quite difficult. Thanks

Prayer for the Week

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring us again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen †

Wanted: Prayer Team Members

I have been struck with a deep sense of conviction after reading the article about Daniel Nash. Read Here. Ever since I have read this article I feel that I must do something to beginning praying for ministries in a deeper way. Therefore, I am going to start by setting up a prayer team to pray for Youth For Christ's annual California Breakaway trip. This is a trip during the spring break for High School students from all over Saskatchewan. The trip has quite a large portion of unchurched students and the trip features small group meetings through the 10days as well as a speaker during some large group meetings. Here is what I am looking for...

-Team Members who would commit to praying daily for the trip for 1 full hour.

-Within the prayer team praying for each student and staff member by name.

-Meeting corporately to pray at the same time as the large group meetings being held during the trip.

As a staff member for YFC I would seek to provide a link between the team and the trip to held obtain specific prayer requests as often as possible. I would also seek to have "what to pray for" sheets for each team member to pray for.

My purpose in setting up this prayer team is, "To fervently approach God for salvation to be rooted in the lives of each student through focused continual prayer."

This is my call to action. If you are interested in being apart of this prayer team, please email me at "daryl AT yfcsask.com"

If you cannot commit to this prayer team, there is still ways in which you can get involved. One, you can join us for corporate prayer, which will be announced on this blog at a later time or Two, you can spend time praying through prayer requests either at home, or by visiting the prayer room. (email me and I can tell you where it is and how to get to it). I will post updates for pray either directly on this blog or I will post a link to where to view the prayer requests. Stay tuned for more info.

Praying for the Lost Part 2

So it seems that the more I have read about Daniel Nash and other such prayer warriors the more I am being convicted. How many times do I or other ministries actually seek to pray for the lost souls of those we work for, and how often to we actually expect something as a result of praying for them? I am just as guilty as the next guy, but the time as got to come when we as a Church will begin to truly pray for the lost. Praying in such a manner that we are cut to the soul. Praying for the Holy Spirit to truly take control of a situation, to convict, to cut to the heart, and to give us as speakers, evangelists, missionaries, and fellow believers the words to say; how to say them, when to say them, and how to say them. I feel so guilty that whenever I run a program/event/or otherwise, that we are not truly humbling ourselves to pray. I mean really, what do we do, have a staff meeting/training or otherwise prior to whatever it is we are doing and we talk about things and discuss the people we are going to minister to, and then, just when time is running out, we tack on some prayer. How ridiculous does this not sound! It's the same problem the disciples had in the garden isn't it? They are trying to pray, but what do they do, fall asleep.

We have been given a great task, to point others to this mystery of following Jesus, but we have also been told that whatever we ask and pray for we will receive. We must begin to pray like we mean it, prayer that is continual, prayer that is focused and relentlessly crying out for God to save a dying world.

I commented on my last post that I felt convicted, and I hope you do too. Know I must act upon this conviction. Two quotes from Brian McLaren's book, "Faith that counts, is not the absence of doubt; it's the presence of action", and "...a leap of faith isn't a leap into faith, it's the leap you take because you're already in faith and want to put it into loving action." I have had these two quotes in my mind for awhile, however, until recently I didn't understand why. Now I know. I must take action to pray more for the lost. For starters you can visit the 24-7prayer room that I mentioned in my last post. And if anyone feels passionate about this the way I do, please feel free to give me ideas on how we can make a difference.

An Invitation to Exit the Madness and Pray

Hey everyone …

So, March is here and it seems that maybe – just maybe – the spring thaw is here to!! Fantastic …

I wanted to bring you up to date with some of the news from the emerging 24-7 Prayer community here in Saskatoon. There are a few of us who are really keen on creating a space for prayer that people like you and others can access as a prayer retreat, a refuge, a place of inspiration and rest. We’ve been trying to build a bit of a prayer rhythm into this by hosting a prayer weekend every month …

This is your invitation to step out of the mad pace of life for an hour or so and “be still” with the Lord.

You can signup at: here for the hour of your choosing. It’s then your hour. You can come alone … bring a friend or your family … you can dance, sing, raise your voice in praise and prayer … you can sit, be still, read, paint, write … it’s all up to you as you express your heart to the Father and listen to his reply …

It takes place at Cornerstone Church and if you signup for an hour you can access the room via the outside door marked “The Loft” (near the bus).

New Website:
As well, you may be interested in a new website we’ve put together to share the buzz about 24-7 Prayer in the city: Visit it here. We’d hope it to be a meeting place for all of us, but also an “onramp” for others who want to journey with us. So check it out …

Prayer for the Week

O Lord, you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing:
Send your Holy Spirit and pour into my heart your greatest gift, which is love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whoever lives is
accounted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only Son Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for ever. Amen. †

Praying for the Lost

Recently at a Learning Party, for a prayer community that I am apart of, we looked at a guy named Daniel Nash. Here is a guy who understood what prayer could do and what was meant by the verse, "prayer without ceasing." This has impacted my spirit, especially as prayer related to ministry. The quote from the article we looked at shows what I think is the most profound part of what needs to be changed in today's ministries. The article is quite long, but there is so much interesting stuff in it that I would recommend you still give it a read. I hope this inspires you as much as it did me.

DANIEL NASH: PREVAILING PRINCE OF PRAYER

"Finney never counted on his theology, messages, preaching style, logic, or methods to save souls. He looked rather to mighty prayer and the resulting powerful work of the Holy Spirit to sweep in with great conviction on his audience, that his conversions might be thorough. This may well explain why 80 per cent of those converted in his meetings stood the test of time. Years later Moody followed a similar pattern but without such a prayer warrior. He saw perhaps 50 per cent of his converts last. Today, a well-known evangelist (well-financed and highly organized) recently stated that he would be delighted if 20 per cent of his converts were genuinely converted. In this day of apostasy with many decisions but few true conversions, with many programs but little prayer, with much organizing but little agonizing, we would be wise to learn lessons from the past. One of our godly forefathers whose life can teach us such is Daniel Nash."

Prayer for the Week

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept my prayers; and because in my weakness I can do nothing good without you, give me the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments I may please you in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Prayer for the Week

Following my previous post I will try to remember to post the prayer for the week from now on.

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because of our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Liturgy and Fixed Hour Prayer

Recently, I have come to discover liturgy and especially prayer books. Coming from a strong evangelical background this was something very different to me, something that years earlier I would have scoffed at for being to repetitive and legalistic. However, as my wife and I have become apart of an establishing 24-7Prayer community in Saskatoon, I have found that establishing "rhythms" of prayer to be vastly important. The first rhythm of prayer I established was in the 24-7prayer communities prayer room where I have been taking time each month for lengthy times of prayer. These time slots in the prayer room have been great times to get away and to hear from God and to cry out to him. The next rhythm, which I am still struggling with, is to withhold the "hours" of prayer. To learn about the history of fixed hour prayer click here. I have picked up the prayer book The Divine Hours which is also available online here.

I just read a blog on repetitive prayers and liturgy that I thought was great. Read the comments as well as there is some great conversation taking place. Give it a read, its not long. Read The Liturgy of Marriage

Hope this spurs you on to a better prayer life and to help establish rhythms of prayer in your life.
